Aim and Objectives

Not sure what you want to do next, but want a career with real prospects, real responsibility, and the chance to see the world?

Intro-to-Shipping@Shore is a beginner-friendly course designed for school leavers and cadet applicants who are curious but unsure about a maritime career.

Shipping is what keeps global trade moving, bringing the products we rely on into and out of the UK every day. If you’re interested in life at sea (or the wider maritime world) but don’t yet know the roles, the routes in, or what the industry actually involves, this course gives you a clear, confidence-building starting point.

Why take this before applying for a cadetship?

Cadet applications and interviews are much easier when you can show you understand the industry, not just that you like the idea of it. This course helps you build the knowledge (and the vocabulary) to speak confidently about shipping and the careers it offers.

What you’ll learn

  • By the end of the course, you’ll have explored:
  • Why shipping exists - what it enables, and why it matters to everyday life and the economy
  • Ship types - the main kinds of commercial vessels and what they’re designed to do
  • Maritime law - the basics of the rules and responsibilities that keep shipping safe and organised
  • Maritime geography - how routes, ports, and locations shape how shipping works
  • The people involved in the industry - the key roles and how they fit together across sea and shore

After the course, you can expect to:

  • Explain commercial shipping clearly in your own words
  • Understand the main vessel types and where they’re used
  • Have a solid foundation in core maritime concepts (law, geography, industry roles)
  • Feel more confident choosing your next step - whether that’s a cadetship, further study, or exploring maritime careers ashore
  • Sound more informed in applications and interviews by showing genuine understanding, not just interest
